COVID-19 – IMPACTS ON INTERCHANGE

PAYMENT NETWORKS AND INTERCHANGE – COMMITMENT IN LIGHT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

In order to ensure the stability of global payment systems during the COVID-19 pandemic, Visa and Mastercard have decided that the system updates originally planned for this month should be delayed. As a result, the changes to interchange scheduled for May 1, 2020, will instead take effect on August 1, 2020.

Despite the delayed implementation, Visa and Mastercard are working to maintain the interchange modifications announced to merchants, and are currently working to put mechanisms in place to reflect the interchange rates that should have come into effect on May 1, 2020.

Rest assured that we will honor the changes as planned.

What was planned by the payment networks

Visa was planning to update its interchange programs to reduce certain rates, while maintaining its current structure.

Mastercard had planned to significantly change its interchange programs, rates and structure to meet its commitment.

what will change on may 1, 2020, for monetico merchants with interchange plus

Desjardins will implement the changes announced to merchants in February, the conditions of which were included with January 2020 account statements. We’re also working closely with the payment networks to minimize the impacts that delaying the changes in interchange will have on merchants.

Visa : Since Visa’s interchange structure isn’t changing, Desjardins will bill the new interchange rates, as planned, starting May 1, 2020. Adjustments will be made between Desjardins and Visa and won’t have any impact on you. In addition, Visa is also delaying the increase to its international assessment fee (from 0.4% to 0.6%) to August 1, 2020.

Mastercard : Since Mastercard is delaying the overhaul of its interchange structure to August 1, 2020, you’ll be billed according to the current structure and interchange rates (see the rates) until July 31, 2020.

We’re working with Mastercard to put in place a mechanism that will allow for a reconciliation for the period of May 1 to July 31, 2020; the total billed interchange fees and adjustments will reflect what was announced for May 1, 2020. More details are coming soon.
